Attitude of Gratitude

I've learned a lot about humans from raising young ones. I find myself coming up with simple ways to describe profound concepts. For example, while trying to instill gratefulness into my young kids, I discovered this phrase as it blurted out of my mouth: “You can either be thankful or spoiled, not both!” They probably were not acting very thankful at the time. I'll admit I might have been challenged by this statement, as it applies to my own circumstances, more than the kids were!

When do we want children to be thankful? Always. When do we want them to act spoiled?...um, never! This sheds some light onto this very important bible verse:

"Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for those who belong to Christ Jesus."
1 Thessalonians 5:18

Be thankful in all circumstances
Whatever, whenever, wherever we are to find a way to be thankful.
For this is God’s will
Did you catch that? THIS IS GOD’S WILL. How often do we question what God’s will or purpose for our lives is? Well here is a pretty big clue!
For those who belong to Christ Jesus.
Those who belong=God’s family, God’s kids.

The bible tells us to give thanks and be thankful many, many times. Why? A perfect Father wants a relationship with his children. And when you start thinking of things you are thankful for, it often brings you back to the source of those things- God Himself. Not to mention that GOD IS SMART. Studies have shown that that people who are thankful live happier lives, enjoy experiences more, have better health, are more able to deal with adversity. A perfect Father wants these things for His children.

Here are a few thoughts on maintaining an attitude of gratitude:
  • Thankfulness is an emotion, a response, a perspective that needs to be cultivated. The more you actively purpose to be thankful, the more you can train your thinking patterns. Spending time with grateful, positive people will help this!
  • Challenge yourself to complain less, and be verbally thankful more. Start speaking it out. It is amazing to see the response from others when you show them your gratitude! It honors them and brings out their value!
  • When you pray, remember & thank God for what He has done. Think about what He might be currently doing in your life, and even thank Him in advance for what He will be doing! You might just realize how thankful you are!
"Let the peace of Christ keep you in tune with each other...And cultivate thankfulness."
Colossians 3:15-17
