Motivation & Momentum
What are your resolutions... or goals? Maybe you are overwhelmed by having too many, or on the flip side, are avoiding making any goals all together! That’s okay! You're okay! ...Actually you're more than okay, you're amazing & have so much potential for greatness! Maybe you just need a bit of motivation.
The word motivation can both describe action, and also a driving force behind our actions. Our actual behaviors from day to day tend to reflect a bigger purpose/belief that we have, whether we realize it or not. Spending time thinking about the "big picture" helps to frame where we want to go. Do you want to eat healthier? Have better relationships? Start or improve at a hobby? You don't end up at these destinations overnight; it takes small, purposeful steps towards these big-picture goals.
Let's talk about momentum. Imagine pushing a car that is in neutral. It's very heavy and you (and a friend or two) push with all your strength. Once you get the car moving a little, it gets easier to push. At some point you might even find yourself going down a hill, in which case you'll be cruising! Similarly, it requires upfront effort to begin something new, but the output of energy becomes easier as you move forward.
If you find yourself far away from where you want to be in life, let me suggest making a "bite-size" goal. These are simple, achievable goals that require small changes, yet lead towards your bigger-picture dream. This will help you build momentum because you’ll feel accomplished in something, even seemingly small, and consequently feel more motivation to begin the next bite-sized goal. As the saying goes: How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!
Here's my challenge for you:
Choose a small goal to tackle. It might not mean much to most people, but this is YOUR life and if you want to step into that brilliant future of yours then you need to own your choices & habits, even if the steps seem small. Maybe it’s waking up ten minutes earlier consistently so you aren’t so rushed in the mornings. Maybe it’s making a healthy breakfast every day. Maybe it’s beginning to read the bible for ten minutes a day. You choose! You’ll know what to do! Once you’ve tackled this “small” feat for a week or two, it becomes a new habit, part of your lifestyle, and you’ll be ready to build in new things since you have some momentum. As you move forward, be kind to yourself, and celebrate the small things!
"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9
